Welcome 2026!

A few days before Christmas, I received greetings from two audio buddies, J-Rob and Gary B., with the above caption taken from Part 2 of Shared Dreams article by another friend, Devon T. of OJAS published by MJ Audio Technology in Substack. Perhaps this glitch is one of the reasons why we are being cautioned about AI.๐Ÿ˜‰

๐ŸŽ„HAPPY HOLIDAYS + 2025 Redux!๐ŸŽ„

Not much has changed in the man cave since my last update. At any rate, here's a mini-tour to a tune celebrating the holiday season by the Vince Guaraldi Trio.

Thrifted Hi-Fi

Last time, the Altec 753Cs were driven by my Resto-mod Magnavox 8601 amp. In the spirit of my Vintage Japanese Drivers page from my old website, the same amp will now be used in the context of audio components and speakers I found in flea markets, thrift stores and yard sales + some DIY added to the mix.

Fulton FMI 80

One evening, I spotted the above pair of speakers on FB marketplace. The description was plain and simple, "a pair of speakers in wooden cabinets for $30." Since the seller was less than an hour's drive away, I immediately sent a message expressing interest. I received a quick reply and set an appointment to pick up the following morning.

Advent Model 300 FM Receiver

The Advent Model 300 receiver is an example of exquisite industrial design! I see Dieter Rams' influence in the input selector switch and knobs, as used in the Braun CSV60 tube integrated amplifier from the early 60s while the rotary vernier tuning dial echoes FM tuners by H. H. Scott.

A Tribute to Don Garber of Fi + Robin and Lipman!

Don Garber's Fi 2A3 amp Ad from Sound Practices

My first exposure to Don Garber's Fi 2A3 amp was at a gathering of burgeoning SE-DHT/High Efficiency speaker enthusiasts organized by Mike LaFevre of Magnequest and Peter Breuninger, then president of the Philadelphia Audio Society. This was held in the outskirts of Philly during the latter part of 1994. I attended to assist my friend Steve Melkisethian in exhibiting the Audio Note Kit 1 amplifier since he was the US distributor of Audio Note UK Kits, transformers and parts at that time. Sadly, these guys are no longer with us. ๐Ÿ˜”

Old Haunts: Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Juilliard School + the UWS

Carnegie Hall

Leica M6 + Leitz 8-element Summicron 35mm
Kodak PX125 in Diafine

I heard many great artists, chamber music groups and orchestras visiting NYC at this venue. In 1982, I was one of the few fortunate young violinists chosen to participate in Alexander Schneider's New York String Orchestra. We performed here on Christmas Eve! I've also played at Weill Hall as a chamber musician.

S.M.S.L PL100 CD player

It's been almost two months since I uploaded this video on my YouTube channel. So far, the PL100 CD player has been performing flawlessly and I'm fairly confident to report my findings!

2A3 Firecracker

GOLDEN VOICE 2A3C

Given the unusual times we now live in and the Chinese New Year celebrated just a couple of days ago, I think this is a fitting upload because according to legend, firecrackers are used to chase away evil spirits!๐Ÿ˜‰

About a year ago, I ordered a matched pair of Golden Voice 2A3Cs from AliExpress priced a little below $100, shipped. Within two weeks of receipt, one tube started arcing. I sent the above TV7 test video to the seller.

Remembering Mommy (1934-2021)

Four years ago, on January 23, 2021, I lost my dearest mom. I vividly remember our last conversation. She was very concerned about the January 6 riot at the Capitol and wanted to be assured that there won't be more violence thereafter. Before we hung up, I promised her that I would call after Joe Biden's inauguration. I never got a chance to speak to her again...

Graybar Electric Company

The Graybar Building is a landmarked art deco structure on 420 Lexington Ave., NYC. It was once the corporate headquarters of Graybar Electric Company They distributed the Western Electric 755A, 756A, 728B wide range drivers, 753C, 757A studio monitor speakers + more, which inspired projects featured in this blog.

KARMADON 311 Tonearm

Miyabi

In late 2023, Serge Rogozyansky of Karmadon posted his exquisitely crafted Ortofon-inspired 12" tonearm on Facebook. Being an aficionado of bespoked pieces, I was smitten! When I mentioned it to Tish, her immediate reaction was, "You already have too many turntables and tonearms!"๐Ÿ˜‰

Due to an upcoming visit to the Philippines, I had to curb my enthusiasm.

Intact Audio Speaker Autoformer + Lycan3R WP12024 Horn

I ordered the Intact Audio speaker autoformer with a -6dB to -15.5 dB/0.5dB attenuation range based on the fact that my Altec 802 drivers are about 12dB more sensitive than my 99 dB/1W/1M Altec 414A woofers. Other than that, I went into this project hoping that Google would be my friend, only to find out it wasn't!๐Ÿ˜‰

Since I use external crossovers for my Altec 753C, disconnecting (and reconnecting for comparison purposes) the Altec 32C/802 horn/compression driver is a breeze. The 753C-style cabinets essentially serve as bass bins in which the 414A woofers operating in wide range mode (unfiltered) + the 20275 diaphragmed 802 compression drivers mounted on the Lycan3R WP12024 horns are perched on top!

JE Labs Mono HiFi 2024

Over two decades ago, I ventured into single channel music reproduction to trace the roots of high fidelity. From that whole experience, I developed an aesthetic quest for a certain purity and honesty in sound, which runs parallel with my other hobby of black and white film photography! Sadly, I had to leave that particular mono set up in the attic in 2017.

I wasn't able to attend any hamfests this season but I made sure I'd be at both events at Kutztown.

Classic JE Labs HiFi in Manila

This was how the attic looked when we left in early 2017. Our first visit since then was in March this year.

Back to the Future: AR XA + NAD 3020

Whenever I find them at reasonable prices, I re-acquire audio components I owned and enjoyed in the 80s. I started my quest with the Grace G707 tonearm, a TDA1541-equipped Magnavox CDB 473 CD player and the dynakit stereo 35 PP EL84 power amp. I also tried to rekindle my affection for the BBC LS3/5A monitor and my MC SUT collection now includes a pair of Sony HA-T10s. Meanwhile, I've been hunting for an AR XA turntable and a first generation NAD 3020 to complete my journey back in time.

A Visit to VAS Audio - SPU-G, Miyabi & Ikeda

During a recent visit to Steve and Ray at VAS Audio, my attention was caught by an amplifier I built in the early 2000s. This is one of the very few I released into the wild.

AliEx amorphous, Hashimoto HL20K6 + Sony TamRadio line output transformers

L>R: 6AH4 + AliEx, 12B4A + Sony/Tamradio and 6AH4 + Hashimoto HL20K6

The last time I saw my buddy J-Rob was pre-COVID, but we keep in touch via email and text messages. During one of those hello/how you doin' moments, the chat progressed to line preamp transformers and how the $100/pr. amorphous jobs from AliExpress perform.

I used to own a pair of Tango/Hirata NP216N nickel line OPTs, which were featured in my Sound Practices issue 17 homebrewer article. In hindsight, I don't think I gave them a fair chance so this was a good opportunity to revisit the topology.

Lycan3R WP12024 Horn

A couple of months after I blogged about the 3D printed prototype of the WP12024 horn, Trieu sent a pair of these beautifully finished cast aluminum production versions. Included in the package was a set of parts for a horn stand patterned after the Western Electric original I've only seen in Stereo Sound Tube Kingdom.

Two RCA derived octal phono preamps

Keen-eyed readers and visitors to my YouTube channel may have noticed the two octal phono preamps I've been using in my recent uploads. I built them for the following reasons:
  1. Although the Loctal EAR 834P had no problems driving the Intact Audio nickel autoformers, the 5k Ohm output Z of the Shure M65 phono preamp sounded very anemic.
  2. In the spirit of not leaving stones unturned and my curiosity for other sonic flavors notwithstanding, I looked back to passive RIAA EQ phono circuits I've been wanting to build, which have low enough output impedance to drive an Autoformer Volume Control.

Shielded Finemet FM-MCT1 MC Step Up Transformers

It's been almost a year since my favorable review of this Finemet MC step up transformer. Overall, it has given me great musical pleasure! However, when tasked to amplify MC phono cartridges with lower output than a typical Denon DL103, in particular the Ortofon SPU and Fidelity Research FR1 MkII, hum could be intrusive in softer passages of classical music, especially when not carefully sited away from motors and power supply transformers.

As I had suspected in my initial review, the FM-MCT1 wasn't as well shielded as the Hashimoto HM7, Tamura TKS83, Altec 4722 and other vintage MC SUTs in my collection.๐Ÿ˜” Now, I had no recourse but to compromise my aesthetic preference for an open chassis in favor of an enclosure to provide additional shielding.

Silbatone Box Adventures

from Western Electric Oscillator July 1947

Whether it's an open baffle as conceived by G.A. Briggs or an enclosed box like the Western Electric utility boxes above, I've always been an advocate for a wide baffle design. The wide frontal area serves as an acoustic reflector that helps propagate sound toward the listener instead of escaping to the sides and back. Somehow the wide baffle, whether open or closed, always makes reproduced music sound more alive to my ears!

A notable exception is the narrow front baffle Silbatone box designed by Dr. Stefano Bae for the Western Electric/Altec 755A. Since I uploaded the cabinet project under the auspices of Joe Roberts, it has garnered a following amongst DIYers who've reported successful results mounting other 8' drivers like the Altec 755C, 755E and the Lafayette SK98/Pioneer PIM8L

I finally got a chance to mount and listen to my 755Cs and PIM8Ls + other 8" wide band drivers. Hopefully, this article will encourage readers to DIY this mini-monitor sized box because it really offers a lot of musical pleasure per cubic inch!

To recap, let's start with the...

SETUP 2024

Single Ended Triode Users of the Philippines 2024

At the dawn of the 21st century, I uploaded hifi systems owned by audio buddies who had been inspired by the Sound Practices ethos. These were the guys who originally coined SETUP. After a couple of decades, the number of Filipinos who indulge in this hobby has increased exponentially.

Here's what I saw and heard during my recent visit.๐Ÿ˜Š
